When buying filters for your grease hood, your choices typically include stainless steel, aluminum, or galvanized hood filters. If you’re interested in a durable, and affordable filter and don’t need one with a shiny finish, galvanized is a great option. But what exactly is galvanized steel? And which galvanized filter is right for you?

What Is Galvanized Steel?

Kason-Trapper-Galvanized-Hood-Filter-2Hot-dipping the steel effectively coats it in zinc, which helps protect it against corrosion and rust. How does this compare to stainless steel? This is because galvanized steel is simply steel that has been coated with a protective layer.

Stainless steel, on the other hand, is a composite material made up of steel and about ten percent chromium. Stainless steel is stronger and lasts longer than galvanized, but it is quite a bit more expensive. Continue reading

Baffle Filters

With so many different types and styles of baffle filters to choose from, one of the most common questions we get at HoodFilters.com is “which filter is right for me”.

The answer to that question depends on the cooking environment and how much you want to spend to ensure durability and corrosion resistance. When it comes to durability, the main factor to consider is how the filter is constructed.

There are two primary construction options: welded and riveted.

Both hood filter types do an effective job of collecting grease, however, each type offers unique attributes that may be better suited for one commercial kitchen than the other. Continue reading

Aluminum Hood Filters

When selecting a baffle hood filter for a commercial kitchen, what’s best for you depends on a variety of factors including the volume and type of cooking, whether or not the filter will be visible to guests, and the amount of money you want to spend. If you have a relatively low volume kitchen or simply want to save money, you may have already narrowed your choice down to aluminum hood filters.

HoodFilters.com offers two main types of aluminum hood filters — standard duty and heavy duty. In order to decide which of these is right for you, we’ll take a look at how they are both similar and different from each other. Continue reading

Stainless steel is by far the most popular material used for baffle hood filters. It’s everything you want in a baffle filter – long lasting, durable, corrosion resistant and visually attractive with it’s bright shiny finish.

When choosing a stainless steel baffle filter, keep in mind that all stainless steel is not created equal. There are varying grades of metal used that impact corrosion resistance – which is one of the most important features of any hood filter.

While different grades of stainless steel do have some visual distinctions, the simplest way to determine stainless steel quality, is by performing a magnet test. Continue reading
