Which Galvanized Hood Filter Should I Buy?

When buying filters for your grease hood, your choices typically include stainless steel, aluminum, or galvanized hood filters. If you’re interested in a durable, and affordable filter and don’t need one with a shiny finish, galvanized is a great option. But what exactly is galvanized steel? And which galvanized filter is right for you?

What Is Galvanized Steel?

Kason-Trapper-Galvanized-Hood-Filter-2Hot-dipping the steel effectively coats it in zinc, which helps protect it against corrosion and rust. How does this compare to stainless steel? While galvanized steel is more rust-resistant than aluminum, stainless steel offers more protection from the elements. This is because galvanized steel is simply steel that has been coated with a protective layer.

Stainless steel, on the other hand, is a composite material made up of steel and about ten percent chromium. Stainless steel is stronger and lasts longer than galvanized, but it is quite a bit more expensive.

Types of Galvanized Hood Filters

HoodFilters.com carries two basic styles of galvanized baffle type grease filters: standard and heavy duty. The Kleen Gard is our standard duty galvanized grease filter and the Kason Trapper® is our heavy duty galvanized grease filter.

Kleen Gard Standard Duty Galvanized Hood Filter

This sturdy hood filter is made in the USA and features a self-draining, smooth baffle construction with dual solid rivets. For added strength, it also features a curved frame with a patented “Web-Lok” design. Snap-in handles come installed. The filter has two layers of equally spaced baffles that have been roll formed.

This series of baffles force grease-laden air to quickly change direction. As the air moves through the hood filter, fats, oils, and grease particles become trapped on the surface of the baffles. Their seamless design allows for uninterrupted run-off grease to run-off more easily and consistently. The effluent then drains from the filter into a separate grease trough.

The Kleen Gard grease filter is easy to install and clean. The smooth, cut-safe baffles have no exposed sharp edges, making the filter extremely safe for personnel to handle. Snap-in handles are included for convenience and filter hooks are available as an option to allow for use in CaptiveAire style hoods. To clean the filters, wash by hand with soap and hot water, run them through a commercial dishwasher, or use a hood filter soak cart.

Kleen Gard standard duty galvanized grease filters are 2” thick and are available in 12 sizes from 10” x 16” to 25” x 20”. It is a high efficiency grease hood filter with a low static pressure, quiet operation, and an average filtering efficiency of 94% at 300 FPM. The Kleen Gard filter self-balances air flow along the entire length of the hood and has a rated velocity of 150 to 300 FPM. It meets all requirements of NFPA 96 Standards and is UL listed for both the US and Canada.

Kason Heavy Duty Galvanized Hood Filter

The second style of galvanized grease filter we carry is the Kason Trapper® heavy duty baffle grease filter. It features a patented two-piece welded design with no rivets. Nothing to rattle. Nothing to fall our or lose. The welded construction combines the baffle plates and frame into a single solid metal unit.

Kason-Trapper-Galvanized-Hood-FilterThe rugged solid baffle design of the filter offers greater durability and longer life. It also gives the Kason Trapper® superior flame blocking capabilities for a significant reduction in fire risk from flare-ups. The aerodynamic design allows the baffles to collect and trap more airborne grease effluent and promotes improved drain-off.

As with the Kleen Gard filters, Kason galvanized hood filters are also very easy to install and clean. Wash by hand, in a dishwasher, by soaking or spraying. Two snap-in drop handles and locking handles are available as options as well as a hanging hook for use with CaptiveAire® hood systems.

The Kason Trapper® is rated 96.4% in grease collection efficiency, is UL listed in both the US and Canada, and meets NFPA Code 96 requirements. HoodFilters offers the Kason galvanized baffle grease filter in twelve sizes ranging from 10” x 16” to 25” x 20”. All sizes have a 2” thickness and are fully interchangeable with existing filters.
