Flame Gard Frameless Hood Filter Details

We carry stainless steel Flame Gard Type III filters with optional locking handles, replacement bail handles, and optional hooks for Captive-Aire style hoods. This heavy duty hood filter is a very economical choice and will last for many years. The Flame Gard frameless filter is NSF certified, meets all requirements for NFPA 96 fire protection and safety codes, and is UL tested and classified for both the United States and Canada.

The Flame Gard frameless hood filter features a very unique design. Instead of separate pieces of metal to create the baffles this filter features a two-piece die stamped construction that makes the baffles a structural part of the filter. It gives the effect of having a single piece that is curved and bent to create the folds for the baffles.

How Does the Type III Flame Gard Grease Filter Work?

As food is cooked, various effluents get mixed in with water and grease vapor. These solids are carried up by the air flow and drawn into the vent hood. When this aerosol hits the Flame Gard Type III filter, the baffles force the mixture through several rapid 180° turns.

Flame Gard Type III Frameless Hood FilterThe heaviest parts of the aerosol slow down and settle onto the surface of the filter while the lighter air continues into the duct work. Solid deposits from grease vapor are caught in the folds of the full filter height baffles. Instead of retaining the grease deposits the smooth surface of the Flame Gard frameless filter allows for grease to quickly and easily drain out.

The grease deposits slide down to the grease trough and then on into the grease cup or tray. This high level of grease particulate extraction significantly reduces fire hazards and improves air quality by keeping grease buildup out of the rest of your ventilation system.

Flame Gard Type III filter will also help your exhaust system will perform more efficiency as the Flame Gard frameless grease hood filter ensures a more constant flow of air than other filters. In addition to increased airflow efficiency, this filter also has a low static pressure.

Flame Gard Type III Hood Filter Benefits

How to Determine What Size Flame Gard Filter to Order

Flame Gard Type III Frameless Hood FilterStainless steel Flame Gard Type III frameless filters are available in 13 sizes from 10” x 16” x 2” up to 25” x 20” x 2”. When ordering hood filters for your commercial kitchen ventilation, it’s important to get the right measurements.

Measuring for the correct size Flame Gard frameless hood filter is simple but very important. You can start by measuring each of the filters you currently have that you need to replace. Just remember that the first measurement listed is height and the second is width.

If you aren’t sure which side of the filter is the height and which is the width, a handy rule of thumb to remember is that the baffles run vertically, up and down, while the width runs horizontally.

If you don’t already have any filters installed in your hood, you can simply measure the vent hood opening. Begin with the vertical dimension, from top to bottom. Then measure the horizontal dimension from left to right.

It’s important to note that you only need to measure where the filters will actually be installed and not the entire ventilation hood. Once you have these measurements, if needed, you can use our hood filter calculator to determine how many Flame Gard Type III filters you’ll need to fill the area.

When purchasing hood filters, it’s easy to get a little confused about the sizing. Filters are commonly listed in nominal sizes, with the measurements rounded up. It’s typical for the exact measurements of hood filters to actually be about ½” smaller than the nominal size listed. So before you order, just be sure to round up both your vertical and horizontal measurements to the nearest ½”. That will ensure you get the correct size filter.

Flame Gard Frameless Hood Filter Installation

Flame Gard baffle grease filters are easy to install. Before inserting them into the vent hood’s filter track, simply make sure the baffles are in the vertical position running up and down. They must be installed in this configuration to allow grease effluent to drain down.

Hood filter installation and removal for cleaning can be made even easier – and safer – with a special hood filter lifting tool called the Baffle Boss. It is lightweight, features a five foot long handle, and can be used for nearly any size or style of filter.

Hood Filter Cleaning and Maintenance

Making it convenient and hassle-free to remove filters for cleaning helps encourage a regular maintenance schedule. And the cleaner a ventilation system is kept, the safer and more efficient it is.

Cleaning hood filters is one of the most important things you can do to keep your ventilation system up and running smoothly. It’s also required by fire code regulations to ensure that they don’t become clogged with grease and grease particulates.

Grease buildup in ventilation systems is a leading cause of fires in commercial kitchens and restaurants. Regular cleaning of your hood filters will drastically reduce your risk. Keeping your filters clean can also help you avoid excessive heat and accumulation of smoke in the air.

The NFPA has outlined requirements for how often hood filters should be cleaned. Depending on the frequency and the type of cooking operations, it could be monthly, weekly, or even daily.

Cleaning your Flame Gard frameless hood filters does not have to be difficult though. One of the simplest and most popular ways to get them clean is with a hood filter soak cart. Just fill the cart with water, add degreaser, wipe of the excess grease, and then soak overnight and rinse or run through your dishwasher.

If you don’t use a soak cart, simply wash them in dishwasher or a sink filled with hot, soapy water. Bleach and harsh cleansers should not be used as they may cause corrosion of some filter materials.

As we mentioned earlier, the Baffle Boss tool makes removing and replacing filters a breeze. You might also want to consider investing in an extra set of hood filters so you can avoid any disruption to your operations. Once they’re clean, just dry the filters and reinstall them into the filter track.
