How To Install A Flame Gard Access Door

Flame Gard Access Door

One of the most popular duct access doors on the market is the Flame Gard Access Door. It features a UL-listed, NFPA approved gasket that is rated to 2,300 degrees. Installing the Flame Gard door is simple and straightforward, so you’ll be able to get your duct system in compliance and easily accessible without a hassle.

Here’s what to do:

Make sure you have all of the parts and tools

Before beginning the installation process, check to see if you have everything you’ll need in order to complete the job. Your Flame Gard Access Door should include an instruction guide, a self-adhesive template, the two-piece door system, and hardware. Tools that you may need for installation include a hole punch, drill, hole saw, and a reciprocal saw.

Apply the template to the desired location

The self-adhesive template that is included with the access door makes it easy to drill all of the holes and make all of the cuts for a precise fit. All you have to do is place the template against the duct at the location in which you wish to install it. Then, you can carefully peel off the backing paper and apply the template against the duct. Now, you’re ready to begin making holes.

Make holes in the points indicated on the template

Before drilling the holes, it’s beneficial to use a hole punch on each of the indicators shown on the template. This will result in more accurate holes and a tighter fit for the access door. Once you’ve completed punching the holes, you can begin to drill the stud holes, making sure to wiggle the bit before taking it out to hone the holes slightly. Finally, use a hole saw to create access points for cutting out the metal.

Cut along the lines with a saw

You can use whichever kind of electrical metal cutter (such as a reciprocal saw or electric shears) you have to cut along the lines on the template. After completing two sides, place a piece of duct tape on each side to keep the metal piece from falling into the duct once you finish cutting.

Test the holes for accuracy before attaching the door

Hold the frame up against the outside of the duct to ensure that all of your holes will align once you place it inside. You should be able to perform a visual check.

Insert the frame and secure it to the duct

Now, you can place the frame inside of the duct with the studs facing toward you, and slide the studs through the holes that you previously drilled. Clips are provided to attach the frame to the duct.

Tighten the access panel on the front

Finally, you can place the access panel on the front and attach via the included wing nuts. Now, you can easily remove and replace the panel whenever you need access to the duct system.
